What Are You?

Phoenix stared at the small bristling creature before him.  He had wandered too close to the humans’ territory when he came upon the stranger.  She growled and crouched lower as he approached. “Don’t come any closer! I mean it!” she snarled.

  Phoenix stopped, not because he was afraid of her, he was twice her size after all.  He was simply curious. She resembled a wolf in some ways, but she was smaller, smelled of humans, and her ears were drooped far down. “What are you?” he asked.  “I could ask the same of you” she growled, “you look like some sort of bear!”

 Phoenix snorted, “Me? One of those terrible things? No, I’m much better, I’m a wolf” he said as he lifted his head proudly.  “And my name is Phoenix. What are you called?”

She relaxed her hackles a little as he chattered on.  If he was going to attack me he would have already done it, she thought. “I’m Emmylou.”

Phoenix tilted his head, “Emmy..lou? what a strange name.”, he smirked.

Emmylou looked as if she were about to say something smart back but then a high-pitched whistle broke the air. “What was that?” Phoenix asked.  “My Master, I have to go.” And Phoenix watched as she turned to run off to whatever a ‘master’ was.  How interesting, he thought, I’ll have to come back soon.  And with that he turned to the forest and walked back home.
